Our reviews: Frankenstein

Frankenstein

In class, we studied an extract from the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, written in the 19th century . This is one of the first gothic novels which was inspired by the romantic movement and the gothic. The spooky, gloomy and dark atmosphere is representative of the gothic novel. The stories are about murderers, ghosts, death, monsters and preternatural events. The 19th century inspired some novelists and it was caracterized by the romantic movement, the theme of death and lost love. Fantastic stories were very appreciated too .All of these inspirations led to the gothic novel.

The scene we studied, takes place in Geneva, in 1816 to 1817. Dr Frankenstein, a scientist, has finished the work of his life, he created a creature out of body parts. He will realize that it was a mistake. The creature chased him during a long time in his proprety…

It’s a fabulous novel which mixes science-fiction the darkness of the gothic novel. Lots of people can enjoy it. As for me, this novel is a good exemple of the gothic novel, the story is original and appealing. The atmosphere is dark and stiffling but the context, the characters and the place make of this novel an attracive and entertaining novel.
